Simple Pleasures

I'm not in a great place right now. It's not something I'm ready to go into detail about just yet, but the medication I was taking for PND has changed recently and the change over isn't going too well.

Added to stress at work, exhaustion at home and worrying about our finances (again) I was glad to walk out of the workplace on Friday with a weekend and half term ahead of me. Friday was actually my birthday but I wasn't really up for a lot of fuss and as I was working anyway we ended up spreading the 'celebrations' (for want of a better word) over a couple of days.

Said celebrations included Matt taking the day off on Thursday. It was great to have him home in the morning instead of rushing off out and he came with us to our usual mum and baby group followed by tea and cake. In the evening I was treated to a lovely takeaway and an early night!

Friday could have been better. It's not great working on your birthday at the best of times but I'm really not enjoying work right now and sat at my desk for most of the day just wishing it would end.

Saturday got better. We didn't do much, just grabbed our wellies and headed out the back of house into the woods. We did some exploring, some playing in the leaves and, when we reached a clearing with a grassy hill Matt demonstrated the joy of rolling down the hill to the kids which went down well. Ollie found it particularly hilarious.

I do love walking in the woods, especially in Autumn. Lily and Ollie always seem to enjoy it too, climbing and hiding and seeing all there is around us. Lily was fascinated by a hole in a tree where 'fairies could live' and we were able to wonder if any of the trees were like the Faraway Tree in the Enchanted Wood which we finished reading a while ago.

On the way back home we managed to pick some of the last of this season's blackberries. Eating a fair few as we went, til Ollie was stained blue and Lily's tongue looked like she had contracted some sort of fungus... I did manage to save a handful and when we got home Lily and I turned them into blackberry buns using our trusty fairy cake recipe.

To make some yourself, you'll need:
2oz Self-Raising Flour
2oz Butter or Margarine (we use Stork)
2oz Caster Sugar
1 Small Handful of Blackberries
1 Egg
1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
1 Small Teaspoon Baking Powder

First, cream together the sugar and butter, then add the eggs and lemon juice, followed by the flour and baking powder. Once combined, carefully fold in the blackberries before adding to fairy cake cases and baking them in the oven at 180 degrees for 15 minutes.

I ate mine with a nice cup of tea but the kids seemed to just swallow theirs whole!

It was a great way to relax and start the half term break and it was to do so without spending more on the credit card any extra money. Other than a fairy appearing whilst we were out and doing all my washing, it was just what I needed and I'm hopeful that this week will be a better one.

Aw, sorry that you've been out of sorts. Hope that you feel better about things soon and that your meds are sorted out. It's so hard when we are pulled in so many directions isn't it? Hang in there, you are doing a great job. The walk in the woods sounds lovely though - and love the sound of the blackberry buns, yummy! xx
